Some people might be surprised to hear me say here that I'm not frustrated with all the people living in third world conditions having several children. For many, reproducing is the only old age social security they will have. It may also be an attempt by peasant farmers to increase the wealth of the family as young children can become an asset on a farm at a young age.
BUT, what about middle class and upper class people in the United States? How can they reproduce another human being when there are 6 year old kids living out on the street in South America, huffing chemicals to stay warm at night? I have heard adoption can be expensive, but surely it isn't much more than the price of giving birth to a baby in a hospital, the time off from work, and then feeding, housing, schooling, etcetera, for 18+ years. The only explanation I can think of that I've heard is that "adoption just isn't the same as having your own." What? The joy of seeing yourself in someone else's eyes? When there are homeless, parentless kids right now that would love to have a different life, it all seems like a racist hierarchy to me.
Maybe I'm missing something.

I know, I think that is so lame. In fact, it's probably just a total ego thing...the main reason they really want a kid from their own loins is to see a little "Mini Me" running around.

Sun, December 11, 2005 - 6:01 PMSure you're missing something...the fact that breeders are selfish and oftentimes cruel assholes.
People in third world countries don't have as much choice as we do with regards to birth control and just life in general.
There is absolutely no excuse for breeding now...not until everyone who desires parenthood have taken care of the kids that are already here.
I agree with you totally :)
